Maryland House to take up minimum wage increase

A bill, increasing the state’s minimum wage, is scheduled to be taken up by the House of Delegates on Wednesday. This would boost the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour by 2017. Substantial changes were made to a bill supported by Gov. Martin O’Malley by a House committee. The original bill proposed to begin indexing minimum wage to keep up with inflation in 2017. The dates of when several increases would take effect was also pushed back by the panel. The measure now states the wage would raise to $8.20 on Jan. 1 instead of July 1. It would raise to $9.15 on Jan. 1, 2016 and the increase would hit $10.10 in 2017.
