Maryland is set to spend $3.1 million to expand and improve bicycling routes for bikers. The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Bikeways Program grants on Tuesday. The grants include $1.5 million to build nearly a half-mile connection between the Anacostia Tributary Trails System in Prince George’s County and the Washington D.C. River Trail.

A grant worth $470,000 is for a major project to extend the Three Notch Trail in St. Mary’s County. Another grant of $320,000 will fund design and construction of a downtown Baltimore cycle track and bike network. As the second set of Bikeways grants announced this year, the total for 2012 is roughly $5.6 million with 48 recipients.
