Former UMD student sentenced in online threats case

A sentence has been reached for a former University of Maryland student charged with threatening to go on a campus shooting rampage. Alexander Song was arrested last March for online threats, although police did not find any weapons in his possession. He was spared prison time, but will spend three years on supervised probation.

In response to the incident, Prince George’s Country prosecutors have been working to make threats by phone and email a formal crime. Song is banned from UMD’s campus at College Park.
