Traffic on Maryland’s I-270 is notoriously terrible. As area lawmakers review options for reducing traffic, increasing safety, and improving commuter moral, however, this stretch of highway that connects drivers from Frederick, Gaithersburg, and Rockville to the Beltway seems to be largely overlooked. There is no space to widen the highway until way out near Frederick where congestion eases anyway, and Maryland’s limited transportation funding is focused on projects like Metro’s Purple Line that will connect Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. For now, drivers may just have to ride it out on I-270.
