$250K in reprimand paid to father of SWAT team shooting victim

The father of a man who was killed by a SWAT team entering his home to carry out a search warrant was awarded $250,000 in court.

Four officers of the Cambridge police department were found to be in violation of his rights because they did not “knock and announce” before entering his residence on May 6, 2005.

The victim, Andrew Cornish, woke up startled from the sounds of the SWAT team’s entrance and picked up a knife to protect himself.  Officers then shot him in the head.

Cornish’s father, Andrew Kane, and his attorney believe that SWAT officers should not have entered Cornish’s home at such early hours in the morning.
