Over 100,000 Americans who have applied for insurance through HealthCare.gov were told they were eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), but are not actually covered yet. According to state and federal health officials, they remain unenrolled due to software defects in the federal online marketplace.

Administration launched a number of phone calls in recent days to 21 states trying to provide coverage to this group of people before they seek medical care. They have advised those who have applied that the quickest way into the program is starting over at their states Medicaid agency.

State officials are still racing to cope with these mistakes. Some were enrolled based on  imperfect data files received from Washington.
