Through federal investigation, it was determined that Fairfax County failed to offer proper education to thousands of students with disabilities during the pandemic. Thousands of students are entitled to extra learning hours through the school or parents can use private vendors at the reimbursement of the schools. However, families that have used outside private vendors have noted delays in getting reimbursed.
Out of the 30,656 students determined eligible for extra hours, only 6,266 have received confirmation. The deadline for county meetings to determine eligibility has been extended to Oct. 15 by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights.
