An audit released Tuesday showed that the Maryland Department of Health lacks the necessary documentation to confirm billions of dollars in aid. Auditors claim that $1.4 billion in federal aid is unaccounted for and puts the department at risk of not being reimbursed.
“In short, the report raises grave concerns about the stewardship of taxpayer dollars during a critical period for public health,” said the Department of Health in a statement. “The Department is moving swiftly to correct these issues using all tools available.”
