A historic artifact has been unearthed at, and shut down, the Sendai airport in northern Japan. During ongoing construction work to repair damage from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami on one of the airport’s runways, workers discovered an unexploded bomb believed to be from World War II. All flights in and out of the airport were consequently cancelled until a military bomb disposal unit could remove it. The bomb weighs in at 550 lbs and has been identified as having been made in the USA. Officials are taking every precaution and a Sendai police have said evacuation of nearby residential homes is a possibility. Many of Japan’s cities were bombed during WWII. Sendai airport itself was a military flight school during the war. Discovery of dud bombs in Japan is not uncommon. The bomb disposal team is still determining whether to attempt to move the bomb or explode it on the site. Flights in and out of Sendai airport will be suspended indefinitely until the disposal unit deems it safe.
