Mexico plans to summon U.S. ambassador over spying charges

“Shared security and responsibility between respectful neighbors cannot be constructed by violating the law and violating trust,” Mexican Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade said. Antonio will summon the U.S. Ambassador to discuss the reports of NSA monitoring and spying that have recently come to light. “Mexico is convinced that the practice of espionage committed constitute a violation of norms, an abuse of the trust built between partnering countries and does not honor the historic friendship between our nations,” he said.

These comments from Mexico’s Foreign Minister arose a few days after the German news magazine Der Spiegel published a report charging the U.S. National Security Agency of intercepting e-mails of Mexican government officials, and of discretely monitoring government actions. The German news source said that Edward Snowden revealed the information.

Meade also referred to earlier promises made by President Obama to investigate spying allegations that arose in September, and is pushing for quick action on the new charges.  “Mexico finally reiterates its confidence in the conviction of President Obama that international law is not an empty promise,” Meade said. “We are sure that the promise of an investigation made with Mexico is not either.”
