Homs gets battered 5th day in a row by Syrian forces

Residential neighborhoods in the central city of Homs continued to get bombed by the Syrian regime on Wednesday for the fifth day in a row. Homs has been the bloodiest episode, with well over 200 deaths, in the nearly 11-month-old uprising. President Bashar al-Assad’s forces continue to overpower areas controlled by rebels.

The U.S. has closed its embassy in Syria and five European countries and six Arab Gulf nations have pulled their ambassadors out of Damascus. The Russians pushed for a resolution to the Syrian crisis at a meeting with Assad on Tuesday, but did request for him to step down. It is reported that Assad is “ready to cooperate with any effort that boosts stability in Syria,” but the Syrian opposition will take nothing less than Assad’s departure.
