China’s leader Xi Jinping has committed for the first time to limit carbon emissions. In a deal with President Obama, who announced a plan for additional U.S. carbon reductions through 2025, China agreed to cap its emissions by 2030 at the latest. Also in the deal was a decision to increase to 20 percent the use of renewable fuel sources in the country. The U.S. has determined to reduce emissions to between 26 and 28 percent below 2005 figures by 2025. This marks the first time a U.S. president has set a goal below the existing 17 percent by 2020 target, according to the Washington Post. The U.S. and China together account for nearly 45 percent of the world’s greenhouse emissions.
