51 dead in Egypt after conflict between police and military

51 people died in Cairo on Monday after members of the Egyptian military and the police force fought outside the Republican Guard headquarters. According to Khaled al-Khatib, a Health Ministry official, members of the Egyptian security forces spared with supporters of recently deposed President Mohamed Morsi and members of the Muslim Brotherhood, to protect the headquarters. 435 people were injured.

Witnesses said the military fired shots at protestors holding vigil at the Republican Guard headquarters as they took a break to carry out their dawn prayers. Hani Abdel-Latif, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry disagreed, saying the security forces fired to protect themselves from an “armed group.”
