2 Western journalists killed in Syria amid shelling

In the city of Homs in Syria on Wednesday, two Western journalists were killed amid heavy shelling from government forces, reported by activists. One of the journalists, Marie Colvin, worked for The Sunday Times of London and was the only journalist from a British newspaper to report from inside the besieged Homs neighborhood of Baba Amr. Colvin was on air with CNN on Tuesday evening describing how she watched a young boy die after his home was hit by shelling. Colvin reported from many conflicts, including last year’s uprising in Libya, and reported Syria as the worst conflict she had covered. She said, “There’s a lot of snipers on the high builds surrounding the neighborhood. I can sort of figure out where a sniper is but you can’t figure out where a shell is going to land.”

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe confirmed the death of journalist Remi Ochlik, who was only 28-years-old. He was killed in a bombing. The deaths of the Western journalists follow that of New York Times reporter Anthony Shadid, who was reporting in eastern Syria when he suffered an asthma attack and died last week. The lethal violence and slaughter erupting in Syria is in need of international action. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney reported that President Bashar al-Assad’s regime demands reaction. “We believe that we are in a situation where we — the international community — needs to act in order to allow for the transition from Assad to a more democratic future for Syria to take place before the situation becomes too chaotic,” Carney said to reporters on Tuesday.
