2 million on strike in United Kingdom

British workers began a massive strike on Wednesday, with up to 2 million workers walking off jobs in schools, hospitals and police stations to protest proposed pension changes. Heathrow airport in London, one of the busiest international airports, reporting things were moving smoothly, though they could expect 2-3 hour delays later. British Airways did not report any flight cancellations, though some code-sharing flights were called off.

Unison, a health care union, said it expected up to 400,000 health care workers to strike Wednesday, with the exception of emergency workers. The proposed pension reforms have drawn widespread anger from workers who feel they are being penalized for the deficit. The Labour Party argues that the government’s spending cuts and tax hikes have contributed to poor growth.
