Washington, DC – House bill to block DC government spending power

0

After city voters approved a referendum granting “budget autonomy” to the District of Columbia government this year, House Republicans have proposed a House bill to take that sovereignty away. The District, who had received approval for its budget from Congress every year since 1973, was supported when a judge ruled in favor of the city after the law was brought to court. The proposed bill would block the District government from spending local tax dollars without Congress’ approval and is expected to be approved in committee Tuesday.
