Washington, D.C. continues to implement Affordable Care Act

Due to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, Washington, D.C. will continue its efforts to implement the new law at the local level. Leaders in the nation’s capital, nearly all Democrats, have already moved expeditiously to continue the implementation of Obamacare. Legislation creating a health insurance exchange became law in December 2011, and D.C. officials hope to have the exchange fully operational sometime in 2013.

The D.C. Council Committee will consider nominees to the board of the health exchange on Friday. The District already provides Medicaid coverage up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Officials in the District have also passed laws permitting residents to remain on their parents’ health insurance until age 26 and mandating that 80 percent of health insurance premiums be spent on medical care.
