Wage bill affecting Wal-Mart goes to DC mayor

A bill seeking to require Wal-Mart as well as other large retailers to pay their employees a “living wage” of at least $12.50 per hour has been sent to D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray. The bill comes to Gray about seven weeks after being passed by the D.C. Council.

The mayor received the bill on Friday. Gray now has 10 business days, starting on Tuesday, to either sign or veto the bill. Gray has previously expressed reservations about the bill’s affect on economic development.

Wal-Mart has expressed that it will not build three of its six stores it has planned for the district if the bill becomes law.

The Council approved the bill on an 8-5 vote.
