DC Councilmember under ethics inquiry

According to four people, the District of Columbia’s ethics board has questioned them about the role of Councilmember and mayoral candidate Jack Evans in turning over a city-owned alley to George Washington University.

These four people were questioned about whether Evans did anything inappropriate when he introduced the bill to give the university the alley without any conditions.

Jackson Carnes, who was one of the four interviewed, said Evans told him that he was not demanding that the university reimburse the city for the alley because he wants the university’s support for his mayoral bid. Evans denies making those remarks to Carnes, and says he is unaware of an ethics board inquiry.

Community leaders wanted George Washington University to reimburse the city for the alley, which was valued at $2.8 million.
