Metro proposes to increase fares by 5 percent

Metro proposed an increase of about 5 percent to bus and rail fares, in an effort to offset their budget. Metro needs to overcome $116 million in maintenance and operating costs. Metro General Manager Richard Sarles says the system has been hurt by “years of not spending enough money on maintenance.”

The proposed hikes would have the biggest effect on paper fare cards, with a flat rate of $6 during rush hour and $4 during other times. SmartTrip rates would go up by 75 cents to $5.75 during rush hour, with the base rate going up to $1.70. Bus fares would also go up by a dime.
