Study shows occasional marijuana use poses less risk to lungs than cigarettes

A 20-year study in to the effects of marijuana use found that smoking marijuana once a week, or once a day in some cases, did less long-term damage to the lungs than cigarettes. Researchers analyzed more than 5,000 men and women, aged 18 to 30, from four U.S cities to conduct their study. The study found that occasional pot use did not show the reduced lung function seen in cigarette smoking.

Participants who smoked marijuana in greater amounts did show reduced pulmonary function. The study only looked into marijuana’s effect on the lungs, and did not examine the other negative effects of marijuana use, such as lapses in memory, concentration and perception.
