Lawmakers plan legislation for new Latino museum

Lawmakers are introducing new legislation to Congress to create a national Latino American history museum.

Two years ago, a presidential commission called for the creation of a Smithsonian American Latino Museum, but the effort was halted in Congress.

The Friends of the American Latino Museum group has been raising money in a support effort to urge Congress to authorize the museum. A similar bill gained support last year in the Senate, but stalled in the House.

Actress Eva Longoria and producer Emilio Estefan have been leading proponents of the museum effort.

In 1994, the Smithsonian filed a report titled “Willful Neglect” and noted that Hispanics were the only major contributor to American society not represented in the museum complex.
