Family sues after child is wounded by stray bullet

The family of a D.C. boy who was gravely injured when he was hit by a stray bullet in Northeast announced plans to sue the apartment complex where the shooting took place. Nine-year-old Jayden Stancil was struck in the head by gunfire last October while playing outside the Mayfair Mansions apartment complex on Hayes Street. Stancil was in critical condition after the shooting and is still recovering from said injuries. Seven months later, and no one has been arrested as of yet. D.C. Police recovered two guns and bullets from the shooting. Two men were also shot, but escaped with non-life threatening injuries. The multi-million dollar lawsuit targets the owners of Mayfair Mansions (the property management company), and the security firm at the complex. The lawsuit claims that security gaps made the shooting possible. The family also declared that the District’s crime lab neglected to process the scene after the shooting. Ballistics tests are still being processed to this day. Meanwhile, Stancil has defied the odds and has re-learned to walk.
