District officials brief residents on plans for streetcars

Transportation officials in the District of Columbia will be providing residents with an update on the new streetcar that is expected to begin operation next summer. A quarterly meeting will be held on Thursday at Spingarn High School, where the D.C. Department of Transportation plans to present their theoretical plan for connecting the streetcar to Union Station.

Recently, transportation officials announced that they agreed to purchase two trolleys from an Oregon firm and that they also bought the city’s first three streetcars from the Czech Republic. Transportation officials expect to have a 37-mile streetcar network connecting areas of the city that are isolated from public transit. The initial two and a half mile line will run along the H Street Northeast corridor.
