District Mayor Vincent Gray defends 2010 campaign amid investigation

The District’s Mayor, Vincent Gray, defended himself at a news conference on Wednesday, amid reports of a federal invasion at the home and office of a major fundraiser for him and other District politicians. During Gray’s 2010 campaign for mayor, he reported he was unaware of any wrongdoing or illegal acts that may have been committed. The Mayor said he never handled any cash or money orders.

In the summer of 2011, The Washington Post reported that Gray’s campaign accepted cash donations above the legal limit, and campaign workers improperly exchanged the contributions for money orders. Alleged campaign finance irregularities in Gray’s successful mayoral bid will remain under investigation by federal authorities.
