December 4 marks opening of first DC Wal-Mart stores

The grand opening of the District of Columbia’s first two Wal-Mart stores will take place December 4.

The franchise announced the opening Tuesday along with the plans to open at least six stores total within the district.

Plans for the opening of the additional stores almost came to a halt when a bill was proposed that would require Wal-Mart to pay employees a “living wage” of at least $12.50 an hour.  The bill was vetoed by Mayor Vincent Gray.

The retailer received over 23,000 job applications and will be hiring 300 new employees per store.

One store is located in the Brightwood neighborhood and the other close-by Union Station.
