The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has agreed to hear testimony on the New Columbia Admission Act of 2013. This hearing, to be held Monday, September 15, will be the first time a bill for D.C. statehood will be heard since 1993. The bill proposes to redefine the federal district as a smaller area including the Capitol and the White House and install the rest of D.C. as the 51st state. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is chaired by Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.). This is the first step in the process of statehood for D.C., which is staunchly opposed in some quarters of Congress.
