Virginia rivers remain contaminated after Sandy

0

Harvesting shellfish is still off-limits in three Virginia waterways following a sewer main break during Hurricane Sandy that spilled 18 million gallons of untreated human waste water into a creek that feeds into the Nansemond River. The lower James and Lynnhaven rivers also remain contaminated with high levels of coliphage, a virus that results from the presence of human waste.

Other area waters, including the Chesapeake Bay, have been reopened since the Hurricane when contamination levels dropped.
