Virginia – Pa. man to stand trial in 1990 slaying of Virginia Beach woman

According to the Virginian-Pilot, a Pennsylvania man is set to stand trial in the murder of a Virginia Beach woman in 1990. The trial for 48-yearold Robert William Malick begins Tuesday. Malick faces second-degree murder, rape and forcible sodomy charges for the murder of 17-year-old Joan Schoppaul. Schoppaul’s body was found in a dumpster behind a former supermarket on Dec. 5, 1990. Malick was serving as a petty officer second class in the Navy at the time of the murder. After police announced they had uncovered fingerprint evidence that tied Malick to the murder, Virginia Beach police arrested him in December 2014.
