Demolition on the long-fading Springfield Mall began last week. The mall, located in Springfield, Virginia, will be replaced by apartment buildings, hotels, and expanded shopping areas, which developers foresee will increase jobs and revenues for the area. There will also be expanded walking and biking zones to and from the area, including the Franconia-Springfield Metro station. Macy’s, Target and JC Penny, the mall’s main retailers will remain open.
