Proposed 20-cent bag fee in VA

Virginia Delegates, Joe Morrissey, D-Va., and Scott Surovell, D-Mount Vernon, have proposed a bill that will put a fee of 20-cents on plastic bags. Last year, three common bills were not approved in the House, albeit similar bills exist in the District as well as Montgomery County, Md.

Surovell reportedly says that his constituents are more accepting of a 5-cent fee and “Responses on my blog ran about 64 percent of the people were perfectly fine with a nickel.” The bill is proposed not to raise money, but to cut down on pollution and litter. The fee will not affect bags used for ice cream, meat, fish, or poultry, or reusable and durable bags.
