New bill requires photo ID to vote

A requirement for Virginia voters to supply a photo ID at the polls will become law next year. Gov. Bob McDonnell signed the bill with the idea of protecting the state against voter fraud. However, Democrats relate the bill’s approval to the Jim Crow era, where elderly, underprivileged, and minorities will now be discouraged from voting.

The new legislation does provide a free and valid photo ID for voters who do not own one. McDonnell also enacted an executive order requiring the State Board of Elections to create public education programs informing voters about the new law before 2014.
