Civil rights leader and activist Julian Bond is teaming up with University of Virginia historian and professor Phyllis Leffler. Together, they will be documenting the experiences of fifty-one African-American leaders. Bond and Leffler will be making a joint appearance at the University of Virginia Wednesday to discuss their project. The two worked diligently for the past 14 years collecting data and interviewing various leaders in the black community. The book, titled “Black Leaders on Leadership: Conversations with Julian Bond,” was published this month. The main objective was to document the important experiences of black leaders and core characteristics of black leadership. The idea is to educate and inspire youth. Among those interviewed were: civil right leader Oliver Hill, former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder, poet Nikki Giovanni, and others.
