DMV reports lost toll revenue from unreadable plates
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has spoken recently about lack of funding for his state’s transportation needs, and a new report by the Department of Motor Vehicles has identified one source of lost revenue: drivers with unreadable license plates getting through tolls without paying. The report estimates somewhere between $65,446.73 and $70,474.73 is lost each year when license plate readers are unable to identify cars passing through automatic highway tollbooths. To blame are mud-splattered plates, plates blocked by trailers, old and worn plates, and some vanity plates, lawmakers are considering their options for improving plate readability.
