Countless Fairfax County Library books retained to dumpsters

Thousands of Fairfax County Library books have reportedly been thrown in the trash.

Providence Supervisor Linda Smyth believes, “There must be a misunderstanding, some exaggeration.”

After a group of library employees claimed that around 100,000 books in good condition were being sent to dumpsters, Smyth arrived at the trash bins to investigate further.

While there is a policy in place allowing books that are out of date or in poor condition to be recycled, Smyth reported on the contents of the dumpster as, “It runs the whole gamut of books, and here we are, trying to figure out why we have some perfectly reusable books put in recycling bins.”

Following Smyth’s report to deputy county executive, David Molchany, the library has been told to cease throwing out anymore books until a new outline can be developed in determining which books can be tossed.
