After severe flooding from Irene, Fairfax Co neighborhood plans ahead

0

The Huntington neighborhood in Fairfax County has experienced its fair share of flooding from storms and hurricanes in the past 10 years. Residents hurried to complete last minute preparations on Sunday because the flood-prone area saw expensive and damaging water-rise levels last year as a result of Hurricane Irene. Police canvased the neighborhood with informative flyers advising people to move their cars to designated public lots located on higher ground and to find temporary arrangements for their pets. Experienced residents moved belongings out of basements and first floors and loaded supplies into cars and duffel bags.

Next week, residents of Fairfax County will vote on a proposal to build a levee and pump to protect Huntington from flooding. The proposal involves approval of a $30 million bond that has left voters divided.
