‘Banana Man’ school principal resigns

Karen Spillman, principal of Colonial Forge High School where the now-famous “Banana Man” incident took place, announced her resignation. The school gained national recognition for the suspension of student Bryant Thompson, who ran onto the football field during a game wearing a banana costume. Students protested the suspension, wearing “Free Banana Man” t-shirts, and were told to remove the shirts. The ACLU stated that the school had no right to ban the students from wearing the shirts, under free speech rights.

Valerie Cottongim, Stafford County schools spokeswoman had no comment on whether the banana man incident contributed to Spillman’s resignation. An interim principal will be appointed in the meantime.
