With much pressure on the Washington NFL team to change its name, Trademark Trial and Appeal Board have decided to cancel six federal trademark registrations owned by the team. The board ruled that the term “Redskins” was “disparaging of Native Americans.” This ruling does not mean the team can not use their name, but the team will have a harder time protecting its name and logo if other people use them without permission on. Bob Raskopf, trademark attorney for the Washington Redskins, said, “We’ve seen this story before. And just like last time [in 1967], today’s ruling will have no effect at all on the team’s ownership of and right to use the Redskins name and logo.”
