The U.S. and allies began airstrikes on Islamic State strongholds in Syria Tuesday morning. The strikes included waves of armed aircraft over the area. The State Department has released the information that the Syrian government was informed of the strike targets beforehand, although no coordination of strategy took place with Syria. Jen Psaki, State Department spokeswoman, said Syria was warned not to engage U.S. aircraft, although the U.S. did not ask permission nor give specifics of the attacks. A Syrian activist has reported 18 airstrikes in the northern city of Raqqah, and that seven of these hit the main headquarters there, leaving it heavily damaged.
