Sen. Ben Nelson to step down after term expires

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) announced Tuesday that he will not seek reelection when his term expires in 2012, citing his desire to spend more time with his family and find other ways to serve. “Therefore, I am announcing today that I will not seek reelection,” he said. “Simply put: It is time to move on.” Nelson’s departure leaves the seat open to a pickup for the GOP.

GOP advertising has left a strong battle for the seat in 2012. It is not yet known which Democratic candidate would take up the challenge to run. More importantly, Nelson stepping down leaves Republicans one seat closer to holding the majority in the Senate.
