Rick Santorum’s youngest daughter, 3-year-old Isabella, was hospitalized on Saturday evening at a local hospital near the family’s Virginia home. Santorum says that Isabella was diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs and said the family had a “very difficult 36 hours.” Isabella suffers from Trisomy 18, which is a rare and serious genetic disorder that kills around 90 percent of children before or during birth.

In a speech with Florida tele-town hall voters, Santorum said, “She’s had a miraculous turnaround. We have a long way to go, but she turned the corner and we are very, very grateful.” Isabella will remain in intensive care and will be in the hospital for several more days. The former Pennsylvania Senator says that his daughter is no longer in the “very dangerous” situation she suffered over the weekend.
