Fatal Florida highway crash

On Sunday, authorities said at least 10 people were killed and 18 injured in multiple car wrecks on Florida’s Interstate 75. The crash was caused by hazy fog and heavy smoke from a brush fire, which clouded the highway south of Gainesville. The accidents happened around 3:45 a.m. on both sides of I-75. When patrol officers arrived, vehicles continued to smolder and firefighters sprayed foam to put the fires out. The three lanes on both sides of the interstate remain closed as investigators try to figure out the cause of the brush fire.

The crash was roughly a mile long, which made it difficult for rescuers to look for victims on the clouded interstates. Hours later, a Gainesville driver said, “You could hear cars hitting each other. People were crying. People were screaming. It was crazy. If I could give you an idea of what it looked like, I would say it looked like the end of the world.” The brush fire is responsible for one of the worst wrecks Florida has ever seen.
