Justice Department to stop pursing minimum drug sentences

Attorney General Eric Holder announced on Monday that the Justice Department will not be pursuing mandatory minimum sentences for nonaggressive, low-level drug offenses. He explained America is already “coldly efficient in jailing criminals.” He said, “Too many Americans go to too many prisons for far too long, and for no truly good law enforcement reason.”

He also discussed race causing differences in court sentences, and overpopulated prisons. He said he has been discussing the issues with President Obama and hopes to “strike a balance” and improve the “public good.”
