Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, New Jersey earned the Democratic nomination on Tuesday night after winning New Jersey’s special primary election. The election was to decide who will be the Democratic candidate in the election to fill the late Senator Frank Lautenberg’s seat in Congress. Booker defeated Representatives Frank Pallone, Rush Holt and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver.

Mayor Booker will compete in a general election in two months, where his contender will be Republican Steve Lonegan. Booker says he hopes to bring a twist on politics if he is elected. He said, “They say we are being naïve, to them I say have you ever met us, do you know where I’ve been working for the last seven years. This is Newark, New Jersey, and we don’t do naïve.”
