Virginia Senator hospitalized after being attacked

Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds was assaulted and stabbed in his home on Tuesday morning, and suffered “serious injuries,” according to state police. Also at the house in Bath County, a second person, most likely his son, was found dead. Deeds was flown to UVA Hospital in Charlottesville, where he remains in critical condition.

State political sources, who received information from law enforcement authorities, reported to Fox News that Deeds’ son may have been the one to stab Deeds before shooting himself.

In 2009, Deeds ran for governor against Republican Bob McDonnell, and lost. McDonnell has recently released a statement on the attack. “In this tough and sad time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Deeds family. The news from this morning is utterly heartbreaking,” he said. “Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service. He cares deeply about Virginia, and the people of Virginia care deeply for him.”
