Utah recognizes same-sex couples

Gay couples in Utah were recently allowed to marry, then stopped by the U.S. Supreme court and told the state wouldn’t recognize the unions. After Utah banned on same sex marriage on December 20, the federal government has intervened and said that they will recognize their weddings. A federal judge overturned Utah’s ban.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the government will honor gay marriage in Utah, marking the latest strong show of support for same-sex marriage through the Obama administration. This allows more than 1,00 same-sex couples who were married in the last moth the right to file federal taxes together, receive Social Security benefits for spouses, and request immigration status for partners among many other benefits as well.
