More details of Petraeus affair surface

Retired four-star army general turned CIA director has resigned from his position after confessing to an extramarital affair. The affair was uncovered after a friend of the Petraeus family and volunteer social liaison with military families at MacDill Air Force Base, Jill Kelly, received harassing emails which prompted her to go to the Florida office of the FBI. It was determined that the emails were being sent by Petraeus’ mistress, Army-reserve officer Paula Broadwell. It was during the investigation into the emails which were traced to Broadwell that evidence was discovered of her affair with Petraeus. There is no evidence that Petraeus was romantically involved with Kelly. The former general’s affair with Broadwell began after his retirement from the military in August of 2011 and reportedly ended 4 months ago by mutual consent.  An investigation is now underway to determine if national security was ever compromised during the affair and why the White House was only informed after Election Day despite the fact that Petraeus was first interviewed in connection with the FBI investigation during the week of October 28. Senate Intelligence Committee leader, Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, called the news “a lightning bolt” and said there was no prior indication of Petraeus’ implication in the initial investigation. The FBI responded by saying they followed protocol and did not find any evidence that Petraeus had shared any national security sensitive information with Broadwell.
