Isaac now a hurricane, approaching New Orleans

0

Isaac is now a category one hurricane as it heads for the gulf coast and possibly hit New Orleans almost seven years to the day of Hurricane Katrina. Isaac currently had sustained winds of 75 mph. It’s expected to become stronger by the time it makes landfall, possibly becoming a category two hurricane with sustained winds of 100 mph. Many people in New Orleans do not have the money or resources to evacuate for long, while many families live in trailers.

Officials maintain that the levee system is much improved from seven years ago. Also, Katrina was a much stronger storm than Isaac is predicted to become. Still, many residents are concerned.  “I don’t really trust the levees,” said Robert Washington, a resident in New Orleans, “I don’t want to take that chance. I saw how it looked after Katrina back here.” Another concern is how much leftover oil from the BP oil spill will wash up to shore with Hurricane Isaac.
