George Zimmerman’s family doctor released medical reports illustrating the neighborhood watchman volunteer was diagnosed with a fractured nose, two black eyes, and two lacerations on the back of his head after his confrontation with Trayvon Martin, who he shot and killed in a claim of self-defense. According to two sources who have detailed knowledge of the investigation, Zimmerman’s medical exam was taken a day after the February 26 altercation with Martin, and say that Zimmerman suffered a “closed fracture” of his nose.

Zimmerman, a 28-year-old white Hispanic, fatally shot 17-year-old Martin, who was African-American and walking back to his father’s fiancé’s place after visiting a convenience store. The high profile case has shook the country, causing nationwide protests and illuminating race relations and gun laws in Florida. Zimmerman was charged with murder in the second-degree and arrested on April 11. He spent a short time in jail before he was released on a bond of $150,000. He is now in hiding until the start of his trial.
