Fisherman off coast of Alaska rescued

A fisherman off the coast of Alaska was rescued more than 24 hours after his boat capsized in the Pacific Ocean. Ryan Harris managed to stay alive by getting in a small plastic fish bin and keeping it afloat over the night. The Coast Guard rescued Harris after his crew member washed to shore in a survival suit. The boat capsized before Harris had the chance to call for a mayday. The 8 foot waves quickly separated the two fishermen.

Harris sang songs to himself and gave pep talks during the night to keep his spirits up.  “I never thought I was going to die, but I was worried about Mac,” Harris said. “I’m glad to be here.” At one point the fish bin tossed him out, but he managed to get back into it and balance himself until the coast guard found him the next morning. His crewmate severed blisters and a cut above his eye, but both needed limited medical attention after being rescued.
